"First ever flower grown in space makes its debut!" that's what was said on Twitter by US astronaut Scott Kelly (@StationCDRKelly) followed by #SpaceFlower #Zinnia #YearInSpace.

Zinnia grows very easily on the Earth and flowers profusely during the summer. But these plants, made in the orbital outpost for conduct experiments, apparently struggled to adapt to micro-gravity.

Many of these zinnias appeared to be in bad shape in December after the appearance of mold on their leaves because of the high humidity, according to Nasa. But they have seemed to recover thanks to Scott Kelly care.

The cultivation of these flowers is part of a larger project of NASA, called "Veggie" to grow plants in space to produce food in view of long manned missions to Mars, an autonomy that will be an important complement to the survival of astronauts, the space agency explains.
